"Mercury in Lemonade" Clarksburg Chardonnay

"Mercury in Lemonade" is a wine that celebrates time and place. Sourced from the Kirchhoff Family Wines in the Clarksburg AVA—an area renowned for its premium grapes and cool Delta breezes—this Chardonnay is the result of meticulous, intentional winemaking. A little over a ton of fruit produced just over two barrels, highlighting the care taken in every step of the process.

Barrel-fermented in neutral oak, the wine develops complexity and texture while maintaining its vibrant, lively fruit profile. After being directly pressed and allowed to settle for a day, the juice was fermented with indigenous yeast, with lees stirred twice daily to promote malolactic fermentation. Aged in two neutral white oak barrels, with kegs used for topping, this careful approach preserves the wine’s bright, citrus-forward character without letting oak overpower it.

The name, "Mercury in Lemonade," is a play on words on the storied Chardonnay region of Mercurey in Burgundy and the astrological phenomenon of "Mercury in Retrograde." Just as retrograde periods bring chaos and unpredictability, this wine encourages us to embrace life’s curveballs with humor and grace. The label is a whimsical reinterpretation of the Flammarion engraving, a celestial illustration from Camille Flammarion's 1888 book, L'Atmosphère: Météorologie Populaire. In this playful rendition, the traveler peering through the heavens as a lemon with legs jumps around; an homage to Monty Python's surreal humor, and the absurdity of life.
